25 May Peacekeepers Ceremony and Peoples March (Brisbane City)
Sat, 25 May 2019
9:30 AM – 11:00 AM
The march will commence on Saturday 25 May at 09:30 am in King George Square. It will be followed by a service at 10:00 am in ANZAC Square.
The United Nations Association of Australia Queensland (UNAAQ) wishes to invite you to the annual Peacekeepers March and Ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices of Australian peacekeepers and to lay a wreath in remembrance, as well as recognize our current peacekeepers.
This year marks the 72nd anniversary of Australian involvement in international peacekeeping missions. The nation’s first peacekeepers were deployed in the Dutch East Indies in 1947; around 80,000 Australian personnel – many of whom were Queenslanders – have since undertaken United Nations (UN) operations across the globe in 63 missions. Australian peacekeepers continue to serve in Africa and the Middle East.
The Australian Defence Force, Australian Police, and civilians have played – and continue to play – an important role in UN peacekeeping missions. Over the course of seven decades, they have helped to secure and maintain peace in many nations, demined war zones, trained local forces, provided disaster relief, and assisted in capacity building.
The march will commence on Saturday 25 May at 09:30 am in King George Square. It will be followed by a service at 10:00 am in ANZAC Square. The ceremony will conclude around 10:40 am, with morning tea provided by the Queensland Country Women’s Association shortly thereafter.
Furthermore, we welcome you to wear traditional dress and bring flags and banners that represent your country. You are invited to lay a wreath and if so, please indicate that while choosing the ticket.
